How Do I Protect My Curls At Night?

Over the course of the last year, while on this journey, I have greatly struggled with finding a way to protect my curls at night. So, I figured this was the perfect time to share my experience and a couple options. 

I started with the most popular method:

Pineapple:
The actual definition is very misleading. When we hear the word pineapple we all think of the fruit.  In the curly world, pineappling has a very different definition:

To put your hair into a pineapple essentially just means gathering your hair into a really high ponytail.

Normally ponytails sit comfortably on the back of your head. For the purpose of a pineapple you need the ponytail sitting on the top (near the front) of your head. This protects your curls from being disrupted or flattened while you sleep.

Let's face it, the human head weighs eight pounds, if you sleep on your curls they will get flattened. 

Most people use a satin or silk scarf to wrap around the hair and protect it from the bedsheets and normal cotton pillow cases.

The reason you want to avoid sleeping on regular cotton bedsheets and pillow cases is because cotton pulls and snags the hair. It actually steals all the hydration from your hair while you sleep, which explains why we all woke up looking like the bride of Frankenstein all these years. 

By putting your hair up in a pineapple (at the top of your head) you are taking your curls out of harms way and the satin scarf will protect your hair from being snagged and broken off. 

After a few months into my journey, I cut my hair really short. I went from these long locks...

To these badass red highlights and short cut...

And I don't regret a second of it!
Naturally, with my hair this short, I was no longer able to put my hair up. It just wasn't long enough to make the trip all the way up to my head.
As an alternative I used my satin scarf to pineapple my hair (without actually tying it up, because duh it wouldn't reach) as seen in the first picture of the post.

Otherwise I tried:
  • a bonnet- (it never stood on)
  • A slapcap- (works AMAZINGLY, just make sure to measure your head before ordering to make sure it stays on.)
  • sleeping with my hair out on a satin pillow case (jesus the horror I saw when I would wake up in the mornings)
  • You name it I tried it 
For my hair personally (high porosity 3a/3b fine curls) I found the best success with using the scarf to naturally pineapple your hair. If you need a tutorial I have one!
This is honestly my favorite way to protect my hair at night. If I am not using my scarf then I am putting my slapcap on and using my scarf as a satin pillow case (in the off chance that I am sleeping pretty rough that night and the cap comes off. Which it never does).
