Questions to Interview a Possible New Stylist



Picking a hair stylist is by far one of the most intimidating challenges I've ever encountered in my entire life. So, here's a few helpful questions to ask to ease the anxiety of meeting with a new hair stylist:

Will you be cutting my hair wet or dry?

This question tells you if the stylist has dealt with curly hair in their career. More than that, this question reveals how WELL they have mastered the art of curly hair. The only answer ever acceptable for this question is:

DRY.

Curls have a spring factor that normal straight hair does not have. Therefore conventional haircuts will not benefit curly hair. Curly hair has to be cut in it's DRY state, so the stylist can sculpt and create a unique cut that will allow the curls to grow and blossom. Curly hair is meant to be seen and flaunted in it's dry state. So, why would you cut the hair in it's wet state when you can't tell what it would look like dry?! Amateur mistake #1!

How long have you been styling curly hair?
This question is your RIGHT to ask. You would never trust your car to your dentist and your teeth to your mechanic right? So, same goes for curly hair. Before allowing anyone to touch your hair, you should feel comfortable with their body of work and their experiences. Ask to his/her work, if you have not already seen their social media.

 What products will you be using to style my hair?
This is SUCH an important question. Everything can go right on a trip to the salon, the stylist has experience, they are cutting your hair dry, and then...BOOM, it all goes to hell when they put silicone filled products in your hair. Make sure before sitting down in a stylist chair, that they are using products that are completely free of:

  • Silicones
  • Parabens
  • Sulfates
  • Waxes
  • Drying Alcohol
  • Mineral Oil
If your stylist doesn't have any of these types of products around, make sure to bring your own!
